Inspiring performance by Deeside Orchestra
REVIEW At the other end of the age-range, 8-year old violinist Olivia Curran was soloist in a delightful performance of Kuchler's Concertino for Violin and String Orchestra

THE Deeside orchestra with their conductor Andy Linklater presented the Annual Showcase that is the culmination of a winter's hard rehearsal in Aboyne's Deeside Theatre last night.

As usual their concert was a happy well-attended event, bringing together music as diverse as a selection from Irving Berlin's Easter Parade or Jerome Robin's Broadway to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23.

The musical highlight was certainly the Mozart concerto featuring Donald Hawksworth, formerly Aberdeen's music adviser, as soloist. His beautifully clear, well-paced performance inspired the orchestra to their very best playing.
Schubert's Unfinished Symphony lacked some of the polish that came through in Sea Songs by Vaughn Williams or an especially bright and lively performance of Percy Granger's Country Gardens.

Conductor Andy Linklater himself played a Scottish slow air composed by the orchestra's regular pianist Hugh Melvin.

The air was in memory of second violinist Jack Ewan who passed away last year - a performance that underlined the feeling of warm community that surrounds this orchestra.
